Question Windows event audio problem

I just installed Windows XP professional and the motherboard has a c-media sound chip for audio. Then weird things happened. After getting latest sound driver, the sound for playing media player, playing games, flash player in IE, etc, all worked fine. However, the windows sounds for events such as windows start, windows logon, just don't work. I have tried quite a few times in the "sounds and audio properties" of the control panel, but no luck at all. I have never encountered anything like this. I indeed can play those *.wav files by just double clicking them. But somehow windows itself doesn't link them to events properly.
Has anyone encountered this kind of problems? Would someone help me here? Thanks in advance.
