I would like to know how to remove Outlook Express from the XP installation as well, so if anyone knows, I'd greatly appreciate it.
As for why, frankly, because Outlook sucks and has too many security holes and I prefer to use other mail programs. Therefore, I want to get rid of OE so that it doesn't waste space and keep being annoying.

I have already installed and use another program, but periodically Outlook tries to pop up again, and plus it simply takes up space - which is why I'd like to get rid of it.

Removing Outlook From XP and 2000
To anyone that wants to do it. I searched the net for a way. That is how I found this forum. I did finally find a way to remove it manually at MS's site no less. This is nothing for the faint of heart or computer newbie. The article is at http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q263837
This involves renaiming directories, removing registry keys and renaming files. The article is on how to manually remove Outlook Express, then reinstall it. I did the removal, and did not reinstall, everything works fine. This is on a Windows 2000 system, but it should work fine on XP as well. I did find that Nortons Utilities comes in handy in cleaning up the registry. Nortons did not clean it all out. I had to do a manual search for outlook and wab to remove those keys. After all of this and manually searching for the .dll's and .exe's that you rename to old. After all of that, I just did a search for *.old and I deleted everything except the Outlook Express folder, windows still will not allow that.
I hope this helps someone.

Just wait, sp1 will be out within 10 days, and has outlook express remove in windows add/remove. Because of the law suit.

ah, well, I'll wait and see if that actually removes it or is just a sneaky MS way of making it not visible. I'm sure I need not remind you of the Windows update which sneakily reinstalled MS Messenger on machines it had been removed from.

i have no msn msgr on my system, but i did run update b4 i removed it. the whole folder is gone. It will remove outlook express, WMP, Internet explorer, and MSNMsgr because of the law suit against them. If it just hides them, guess we could all sue them.

This would be true if the option they're adding to service pack 1 was a court order - however it is not. It's MS's way of saying to the courts "see? We're playing nice now" to get them off their backs so they can get back to acting the same old way as soon as possible. As it stands, if the court accepts the proposed settlement, well, MS will be untouchable and STILL able to do many of the things it's currently doing because of the terrible wording of the deal.

Well, sure enough, that "feature" in Service Pack 1 is nothing more than a bunch of hype with no substance
