Write protected folders

Hi,
I have a problem with a write protected file that I hope someone can help solve.

I recently had reason to reformat my hard drive, and re-load all my programs, including XP Home.

I'm also a great Flight Simulator fan, and after loading this, (fs2002) I tried installing 3rd party scenery that had worked perfectly before.

I now get an error message that a configuration file (scenery.cfg) is write protected, and the installation stops.

A check of the file properties indicates an unchecked Read Only box, so where does the write protection come from ?

The folder in which the file is in, is write protected, as indeed are all my folders throught the directory tree. Is this an XP default ?

Downloading a few attribute changer programs and trying these on the folders makes no difference. The read only attributes stay, no matter what I try.

Can someone explain why the installation says the file is write protected, and why attribute changer programs have no effect.

I've contacted the 3rd party author, and even he is stumped by this. He says there is nothing written into his program that requires interrogation of the scenery configuration file to ascertain any of its attributes, and that this looks like a Windows problem.

All help greatfully received.

Thanks

Ron

Itechwiz,
Many thanks for your help.

I followed the Microsoft knowledge base details you highlighted, and checked the permissions / ownership details.

Owner is the administrator (which I thought I was, since I'm the only person that loaded all the programs including Windows) and my computer name Ron\Flightdeck has full control of the fs2002 folder, plus all subfolders and files.

When I rebooted after coming out of safe mode, I get an error message saying the computer cannot find the file path to the flight simulator program, or that I don't have permission to run the program, so I'm now in a bigger mess than I was before.

God, I hate computers !!

I can't uninstall it and begin again 'cos it looks like I don't have permission to do that. I'ts all contrary to what the file security tab is telling me.

Can you help me out of this mess ?

Ron

Itechwiz,

Have managed to regain access to flight sim.

Still the elusive read only problem remains, but I can live with that for a while.

At least I can fly again.
