Unhappy XP taskbar too thick

I have Windows XP on my computer. My kid was fooling around with the taskbar and now it is about an inch high. I've tried unlocking the taskbar, pushing down at the top with the double arrow but pushing down too much forced the taskbar below the normal line and pushing too little wouldn't get the taskbar down at all. How can I get the taskbar to normal size?

Thanks in advance

No, as I said in my post, I have unlocked the taskbar but I still can't get it to change.

Question

What resolution is your screen set at, low and the task bar will be bigger. 800x600 large 1280x1024 smaller

Just a thought.

No, it's not that. The Start button is normal height. It's just that there is a second layer to the Taskbar under the normal one.

Control Panel > Display properties > appearance > check to see which style is currently selected (sounds like you may have "classic" now selected as it will allow a two tier taskbar)
Change if required.

If that's not your problem continue on to "Taskbar and start menu" (control panel) > uncheck "autohide the taskbar" if it's selected. Uncheck "lock taskbar" if it's selected.

Close out of control panel > Drag the top of the taskbar back to the desired size and then right click on it and "lock the taskbar".

If none of this works run "System restore" and back it up a day or so and that should cure your problem.

Fixed thick task bar without system restore

I'm sure you have found a solution by now, but since I found an easy fix, I thought I'd post it here.

There are little verticle bars that mark off the positions for the running programs and the quick task bar. I discovered I could drag those around and get the running programs to the right of the quick task bar icons and the task bar lined up thin the way we like it again.

Hope this helps!

A quick fix that often works if you use the Quick Launch bar is to right click on the Task Bar, go to Toolbars and uncheck Quick Launch. The Taskbar usually returns to normal size and then you can re-enable Quick Launch.
