Windows XP crashes after CPU upgrade

I recently upgraded my CPU using a Powerleap PL-P4/N socket 423 to 478 adapter with an intel Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz with 400Mhz FSB (SL7EY).

motherboard : Asus P4T-M
Geforce Ti4200
on board sound
768mb PC800 RDRAM (samsung)

when I run Windows XP the computer keeps resetting spontaneously. but always within about 10mins. I have Windows ME running on a second hard disk, it runs this okay but cannot do Direct 3d and I get errors when trying to run games to do with the graphics, which all worked fine with my old CPU.

I was told the adapter does not have a pin for CPU temp so I disabled this in the bios (temp monitor) the bios reports a cpu temp of 59C I have been running the machine with the side off and an extra fan. I also told windows XP not to reset automatically on errors, but it still resets.

not sure what to do and would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

It could be a virus/worm whatever, and just happens that you got it just after installing the new CPU?

just an idea

I compeletely got rid of my windows XP installation and re-installed it, getting the same problem - the computer restarted when first running XP properly but was fine through installation.
Thanks.

Are you using a prescott core cpu? if so it could easily be running hot, they have a habit of doing that, and possibly the CPU is running hot and "throtteling" down, as they do when they get too hot?

And its slowing, XP detects this and auto closes?

I think its Northwood, 512k L2 cache.

I thought if the CPU overheats the computer would shut down not restart, also wouldn't this affect the computer in Win ME?

How hot is too hot?

Thanks a lot.
