XP eternal boot.. Installation failed prompt

Hi all,

Been having my share of frustration with XP Pro. I played a bit with the hardware profiles (services..). But everything went fine til the day XP was sending messages to put the installation disc in order to identify some files or drivers.

I didn't bother with that til the boot sequence was SOOOOO Looonnngggggg I thought a hardware problem had appeared.

I was to the point of using the old format c:, only to discover at my dismay that XP doesn't allow this command..!!!!! I tried with W98 bootdisks and it didn't work.

So I tried reinstalling XP... got stuck with two XP Pro OS... Got finally rid of one and tried the Recovery Console trick. I can boot now, but it takes years and I get the "Installation failed" prompt...

What can I possibly do ???

Rick, QC

PS: I'll soon install a 80G HD... I thought of installing XP on this one and then formatting the old one... Is that a viable solution ??

Definately........

Use the 80G HD for XP and the old drive as backup/storage, as per the following link. Note the Assisted and Accepted Answers: -

Installing two hard drives

I'm not teaching you to suck eggs, however, try the following method to perform a 'clean install' of XP next time: -

Clean Install Windows XP

Good luck..............

Thanx Jazz,

I should receive the HD by mail pretty soon. I'll follow your advice and keep the thread posted next week.
