'Cannot open volume for direct access'
Any help on how to fix this would be very much appreciated.

I 'Cannot open volume for direct access' when Chkdsk runs during Windows XP startup. I can not get into safe mode.
I can not run chkdsk /x

I have seen this anomaly quite frequently lately.

Unfortunately, M$ are aware of the situation and are currently researching it, as per the following MSKBA: -
