1394 - Creating firewire temporary network
Im creating a temporary firewire network between a PC and Laptop with a 1m firewire cable. Connected like so:
ADSL MODEM ----- PC ( & printer ) -----firewire cable----- LAPTOP
Obviously the PC with the printer is the ICS (internet connection sharing PC) as the laptop connects through the PC to the internet. Ive succesfully manged to do this and its working, however i cant seem to manage to get the printer to be shared between the 2 pcs and the files to be shared either.
When i try to run the 'set up network wizard' on the ICS pc i get an error, and im meant to run it on the ICS pc first. Any ideas what could be wrong? they must be sucessfully connected as the internet works. Ive tried using each to ping each other but it fails so something is wrong.
Could the cable im using be the problem, I cant think of its exact name but the 2 ends are different. One end is the larger rectangualr end and the other is the smaller rectangle with a curve in one side. Do both ends need to be the same?
I have LAN ports on both PC's would you reccomend going and buying a CAT 5 cross over cable (thats what i think i would need could someone just verify that im right) ? I just thought the firewire would be nicer and also much faster than standard CAT5,(400Mbsp instead of 100Mbps). But if i cant get this firewire fixed it doesnt matter too much as the cable I already had so I didn't go out and buy it.

I wonder if there is big red switch that turns the internet on and off?
