Internet Connection Problems

I installed Windows XP Home Edition with SP1 on my computer, then upgraded to Windows XP Pro (the first edition, build 2600. I upgraded because I needed the extra hard drive support it offered on installation to recognize the new 80gb harddrive i installed). I've already had one connection problem, where I've had to edit the registry to delete a collection of keys to solve the problem (wouldn't let me create any new connections). Now that that's solved, I have another problem. First of all, my computer will randomly disconnect from my isp, and second of all, when I reconnect, it will not let me use any thing that has to do with the internet (for example, I open internet explorer, and it immediately goes to page cannot be displayed, without even trying to connect). No program works. When I try connecting with msn messenger 6.2, it says it is because I have Zonealarm Pro doing something, but it says the same thing even when I uninstall zonealarm pro v5.1.011. Can anybody help? Here's my system info:

Windows XP Professional Build 2600, version 2002
Hardware:
80gb Western Digital Cavier SE CD800
AOpen FM56-SM V90 56k modem
Nvidia riva tnt2 ultra vid card 32 mb
Hewlett packard cd writer plus 8200
toshiba SD-m1212 dvd rom 6x
Kingston pc100 ram 320 mb
P3 450mhz
Viewsonic E771 Monitor
Logitech Optical Mouse
Logitech Keyboard
Sound Blaster Live! Value
Antivirus, or firewall: Trend micro internet security v11.31
Zonealarm Pro, v5.1.011

1) Version of XP
2) Hardware setup
3) What exactly happened leading up to the problem
4) Exact error messages
5) Any antivirus, firewall software you are running

I would head to Zone alarms home page to find the possible solution. I have ran into something similar in the past and it was a Zone alarm related issue (may or maynot be here,...just a suggestion). Even when I uninstalled Zone alarm the problem still existed. I found the solution at their web site and was able to resolve successfully. This was some time ago and I no longer use that particular firewall so I can't be more specific than that.
