With the exception of a slower boot up, which seems to be slowly rectifying itself with the help of Bootvis, I've had no real problems with SP2!

Yeah, my work computer still is having slow boot times...yet my home computer boots quickly.....and I'm talking about in relation to how they both booted prior to SP2. But other than the slow boot on my work computer, I am having no other apparent problems with SP2 either.

But what is this BOOTVIS you mention??? I guess I'll google it and try and find out....

According to MSFT this is not a resolution to faster boot times, but a visualization tool for PC Manufactors according to this msft link:

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system...t/BootVis.mspx

So did bootvis really help with the boot time or no ?

Computer wont boot after SP2!

Help! - I installed SP2, and now have a computer that wont boot. First problem was a USB powered scanner crashing it..Unable to start it in safe mode, it rebooted constantly during boot up process. Now having tried to re-install Windows XP,it just boots to a black screen.

I have a dual boot system a can boot to the second system, but that now crashes when I plug the USB modem, despite reinstalling drivers. I 've only managed to get on the net by digging out an old computer.

I've tried Recovery console getting two choices - 1: C:windows or 2:G:windows
Entering 1 does nothing , neither does any other key!

I think I got further once but was asked for a supervisor /administrator password yet have no passwords set on my computer according to info in 'setup'!.

Ideas, anyone?

tech spec: athlon xp2600, Asrock m'board, sagem b'band usb modem

RIGHT!

Hello all firstly -newbie here

I just installed sp2 last night. I was uptil 5 trying to figure it out but I can't so any help would be appreciated.

Im having the slow/delayed start up time mentioned also. Its a nightmare. I don't know what the funk the deal is? But my computer is taking forever to start.

1.8athlon
512ram
xp home

I remember a while ago updating a security patch before sp1 came out and that slowed down my shut down time -a LOT as well.

Anyone any ideas on what the problem is?

Also, windows messenger seems to have installed itself (slyly) again. Anyone know how to take it off? I can't see the option in the add/remove programs and im not sure if the uninstall option in xp anti spy is for that? (it refers to it as microsoft messenger and I wish to keep msn messenger).

any help greatly appreciated

Regards

Nish

Strangely odd that after 700 views on this topic all the MODS and
old timers are refraining from comment...I will say one thing: the
Updater also gave me the cue to download available updates.
I clicked on it and where normal updates are presented for download (not install) all of a sudden SP 2 starts downloading. I'd been refraining from downloading a sofar Beta SP2 and mistakenly interrupted the download.
BAD DECISION.
Never interrupt an update download. Luckily my guru and I were able to do a repair with an OEM XP disk and I lost nothing except now my browser is acting strangely...we're not thru on this one.

I've not had any slow booting times.
My XP machine is a P3 1gz.

This is to anyone that has installed XP and cannot boot at all!!

You may have needed to have cleaned out any spyware before you installed the service pack update.

You may not get this exact error message as shown in the site below, but because SP2 guards against spyware you need to remove certain spyware before you install SP2, so you need to uninstall SP2 and do that. heres how:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...t=windowsxpsp2

This may also be of use:

Maybe for the Slow Booting people, you may need to run a complete virus scan, or try this website:

There really is no alternative. Ok, some features such as pop-up blocker are also on Google ToolBar.

Here is some information that might help you:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/s...hattoknow.mspx

I've not personally had problems on XP SP2 and its on a P3 1ghz. All my programs are functioning fine. I've not come accross any games that do not work.
XP2 finally justifies my reason for upgrading from Windows 2000, it is what XP should have been back in 2001.

Go here:

Download and install Adaware SE. You should have that anyway for identifying and eliminating spyware. Howver, my point is that you should then browse on that site to the plug-ins ( ok, now they are calling them add-ons)......then look for the one called "messenger control." Download and install and run it....it will givce you the choice to disable messenger.

I dont think its going to be a spyware/adware/virus issue.

Im always pretty good on that side and check regularly (with updated signature files). I use spybot, adaware, avg, hijack this, xp antispy and spywareblaster.

Well, you asked how to get rid of messenger and I gave you a way. I never said it had anything to do with spyware or a virus. Adaware does other things as well, and one is that it will disable messenger for you. If you already have Adaware, then just download and install the plug-in like I said. By the way, if you are still using Adaware 6.0 you will probably want to upgrade to their new SE version; it's still a free version.
