Too Wierd -- Check This Out

Have an almost brand new Dell (2 mnths) running XP Professional. CD's have always played in either drive fine, but the last 2 days, every time you play a music CD, the computer will either lock up or just reboot itself. Any one have any ideas?

Thanks in advance...

Jeff

What program do you use to play audio CD's?

If Windows Media Player, what version and is it on autoplay when the CD is inserted?

Does it work if you disable autoplay thro' Tools -> Options menu and then goto Play -> CD Audio?

If this just happens with Audio CD's, then it's most likely the application that is set to run when an Audio CD is inserted, almost definitely Media Player.

Try disabling autoplay by right clicking on one of the CD drives in 'My Computer' and clicking on 'Properties'. Then click on 'AutoPlay', and highlight 'Music CD' in the content type menu and select 'Take No Action'.

Then try manually play the CD thro' WMP.

You could also try stopping WMP from playing the CD by going (in WMP) Tools -> Options -> File Types and unchecking 'Music CD Playback'.

The fact that autoplay used to work and now locks up the PC is puzzling. Also the fact it happens on both drives is odd.
