Disk Defragmenter

I tried to defrag my drive but there was a pop-up window that says:

"Disk Defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: C:
Please run Chkdsk /f."

So I run Chkdsk /f but on the DOS window, its says that:

"The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? <Y/N>"

I entered Y but when I restarted nothing happened... it doesn't look like it checked something.

Does anybody has an idea about this? By the way, I'm using XP Home Edition.

Firstly Check Disk in XP will not run within a Windows environment, it needs to run as part of the boot sequence.

Check to ensure that you haven't got Check Disk scheduled to run on each restart.
