Switching directories when saving takes forever

When saving a document, when I go to switch the directory, I hit the down arrow and it sometimes takes up to 2 minutes to bring down the menu. Once it is down, I am able to save quickly.

Dell Optiplex gx240
Paging file set to 1024
512 MB Ram
2.4 GHZ
Win XP Version 2002
SP 1
