Question Connected to ISP but cant browse, or ping - RESOLVED

Ok,

A friend's computer is runing XP Home (SP2).

They were getting weird pop-ups and other such things on their computer, i said download and install Service Pack 2 so I could connect via Remote Assistance. Done, successful and the internet was working fine at that point. I was then able to connect to their computer via Remote Assistance and find out what these pop-ups were. As suspected it was Spyware and tonnes of it!!
I ran Adaware and Hi-jack this. I checked all the files on the Internet to confirm that they were definitely Spyware before removing them.

I removed all the files and everything seemed to be working, Internet was fine as i was still connected.
However, since rebooting, they cannot browse the Internet.
All IE now displays is: "Page Cannot be displayed". I also made them ping a website but that was no go too. They phoned up their ISP and say they can see my friends connected and they have no faults. ADSL modem also says they are connected.

Does anyone have any idea why all they can see is "Page cannot be displayed".
I have a feeling a file was deleted that shouldnt have been via Adaware or Hi-Jack this. I do not think it is an IE specific file or registry entry as "Ping" from the command prompt is not working either.
And nor is it a SP2 problem as after the installation it was rebooted and was running fine after that.

If anyone has any idea's I would appreiciate it.

Rich

I am also having a problem quite smiliar to that one.

I am using AOL to connect to the internet and had always just used Internet Explorer to browse because I wasnt very fond of the AOL browser, this was working fine for a long time, now everytime I try to open Internet Explorer it says Page Cannot be displayed.

I also cannot enter Yahoo chat, it wont even load the room list and when I try to use the audibles I cannot choose More Audibles I can only use the ones that are already there. I was attempting to clean my buddylist off earlier today and checked the box to remove them from my address book as well and that wouldnt work either, it deleted them from the list but said there was a problem connecting to the server to delete them from my address book.

My browser within AOL works fine but I would like to have internet explorer fixed as well as being able to fully use Yahoo once again. It seems as though I cannot do anything that requires the internet outside of AOL.

Anybody know what could be the problem?

When internet access is compromised after removing a load of spyware, the problem is almost always the damage to winsock left behind by the spyware.

Download WinsockXPFix and run it on the affected machine. That usually fixes it.

I don't know if it will help with AOL since AOL installation makes its own changes to the winsock stuff.

Thumbs up RESOLVED

Great news, it worked.

For me this post is: resolved.

You may want to start another thread ArchEagleJ, mine was not an AOL issue and yours may be quite unrelated.
