What is going on with my memory??Where is it gone? PLEASE HELP!

I've been cleaning up my computer and out of the 40 Gigabytes of storage I only have 14 free and I have no Idea why all the other memory has been taken up. I got rid of about 10 gbs but there seems to be more left.
When I go to a folder, just say the temporary internet files and i click on the properties it says there's about 4.4 gb worth of files inside. Then when I go into the temp internet folder there's nothing in there, just a couple of files that take up no space at all.
This is really weird as I have no idea what is taking up all my memory. More than likely it's the internet files but I can't access any of them, so i can't delete them.
I was tinking it might be because of streaming movies or something but I don't know.
Can any one Help????

Have you checked to see if there are any hidden files anywhere that may be taking up this space? What about Disk Cleanup, have you tried that?

If it's the Temporar Internet Files that are taking up some space have you tried going to Tools >> Internet Options. From there you can delete the temporary internet files, and if you click on Settings it will enable you to manage how much disk space is used to store temporary internet files.

That's all I can think of for now.

Do you have it set up to show hidden files? To find out, open My Computer or Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options>View tab. "Show hidden files and folders" should be checked, and "Hide protected operating system files" should be unchecked. Once those are correctly configured, you should be able to see what's in the temp folders.

Are you running McAfee anti-virus? There's a bug in one of the recent versions that causes it to start writing log files...and keep on writing them. People have reported losing gigabytes of space on the harddrive within a matter of hours. If you have McAfee, I've read there is a patch for the problem posted on their website.
