Taskbar slow to load/no system tray icons/logon and off problems

1) The problem occurs when XP pro is starting up. I only have 1 user account and so it boots past the welcome screen straight to the desktop.

The desktop background and icons appear along with the taskbar with the clock but no system tray icons. When I hover over the taskbar I get the hourglass pointer and I am unable to use the startmenu or quicklaunch bar for 10secs or so while it finishes loading. Because the taskbar is 'buissy' none of my system tray icons ever appear and i get messages from the programs stating "could not create system tray icon".

I have done a complete reformat although the problem returns once all my software is installed. I am running Zone Alarm, Avast antivirus and Weblocker internet filter and i believe it is one of these processes that is causing the problem.

Has anyone experienced this? Anyone got any suggestions? I tried using a boot manager to delay the loading of these programs untill the taskbar is loaded but some of them were loaded through the registry and so that didnt work.

2) I also have a problem logging on and off or returning from standby as I get a blue screen saying:

> STOP: C000021a (Fatal System Error)
> The Windows Logon process terminated unexpectedly with a
> status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000)
> The system has shut down.

might be related? i have updated all my device drivers and checked device manager for problems incase something was stopping me going into standby or logging off but found no problems. Any ideas on this issue?

SORRY FOR SUCH A LONG POST!!! THANKS FOR READING IT! Hope you can help.

Do you have spywareguard installed?
this is known to cause some problems with system tray icons
If so try uninstalling and se if the same problem occurs

use event viewer to see if there are any errors
Start Run eventvwr.msc

How to troubleshoot a "STOP 0xC000021A" error

I have done a spyware check with Adaware and used Hijack This to check for any strange startup items but everything is normal. I will check the event log today and hopefully that will reveal some clues. Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately no.

I have since had to do a few more reformats due to hardware upgrades and the usual crashes and screw-ups BUT the problem always returns once my programs are installed!

Very annoying.

The only work around i have is to startup the computer and wait for it to finish loading, then logout and login again to reload the taskbar applications. This gets the PC into a useable state - it just takes longer

The standby issues are no longer a problem as they were related to my old ati 9800pro which is gone.

If anyone had a fix that works i will make you a donation via paypal if you share it with me!! Any help welcome! Thanks.

Here's something that might work: make it so you have to put in a password to log in when you turn on your computer. Then, when the log in screen comes up during start up, stop and wait and watch the floppy drive. When the light turns on to indicate a read on the floppy drive, then go ahead and log in. I think some programs get preloaded before a user logs in, and waiting for the floppy drive to get read forces you to wait for these programs to finish preloading, which seems to help with the system tray. If you do not have a floppy drive, then wait 'till the hard drive stops making noises, or just wait 1 minute.

thanks

yes i think that would work perfectly well however it doesn’t get around the problem of actually having to wait which is an inconvenience.
i have a sneaky suspicion that zone alarm may be to blame or possibly weblocker (web filter for the kids) or AVG. These are always the first things i install after drivers and the problems always seem to start around then.
still im learning to cope and i usually just start up once in the morning then use the suspend function through the day to save the hassle of shutting down.
thanks for your suggestion though - i thought this thread died ages ago!
hehe cheers

Hi,
Try uninstalling Zone Alarm... It causes those kind of problems. Specially when you have all those programs loading up with windows....
Tips:
You don't need your progs to load with windows, except the antivirus...
Click on Start/ Run, and type "msconfig" (no quotes), under Startup TAB uncheck all programs that are been loading up with windows Except the antivirus you are using.... (In adition you can also leave any antispyware prog loading up if you want to)...Reboot the computer...
Go to X:/Windows/ Prefetch ... Delete everything inside that folder but do not delete the Folder itself...

Next reboot will be slow but don't worry is gonna blaze in the 3 reboot for sure...
Also download this little prog to help you: www.ccleanner.com

We still need to change some registry keys to tell windows how to manage your programs better... For now do all this I just told you and please REPLAY when done

Hope this help

thanks for the post

i am unwilling to remove zone alarm as i am on a university network a lot of the time with many other users and i wish to keep them out of my shares. i also find the program control function really useful for catching spyware etc. is there a better free alternative? kerio? zone alarm seemed the best choice last time i checked.

would be interested to know if anyone else has problems with ZA.

i do keep my startup fairly well tuned so thats not the issue either (i have only 28 processes running). i always make a point of disabling anything i dont need or use machine wide to keep things as uncluttered and streamlined as possible.

would be interested to hear what reg alterations you suggest but only if you can explain exactly what each does as i dont like blindly changing values!

Cheers
