To see the security tab you need to disable "Use simple file sharing". To do so, go to any window's menubar's "Tools" > "Folder Options..." > "View" then scroll down and uncheck "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)". This will enable the security tab in the folder properties window.

I copied ALL my documents, music, photos etc onto it....ever since then (which is like a year or more) I can't access any of it, can't open them, move them, delete them, nada. I get the same errors listed within this topic. SO...I am going to try what is all mentioned in here and see what happens. If it does.... Drinks on me

Same problem, but different. And solution not working??
I just moved a folder which was a hidden folder of jpeg's. Although hidden my folder options were set to show hidden files and folders. I moved it from the C: drive to my 2nd hard drive, within a folder of stuff i want to keep. then reinstalled XP Home over the old XP pro. Now all the pics are there (in terms of size etc, ) but wont open in any app. I have had access denied messages.
ANy idea's?
cheers L

Error copying file or folder
Hello,
I'm having the same problem as avvr here. Recently I downloaded my pictures from my camera to my computer using the standard Scanner and Camere wizard that comes with Windows XP (as I do always). No problem uptill here, I could view my pictures. After this I made a new folder and copied these pictures into this new folder. After this action I can't do anything anymore. When I try to open my pictures with the standard windows picture and fax viewer, I get "no preview available". I also tried Paint, Photo Editor, Irfanview,... all with the same result. When I choose the Thumbnail option in Explorer, I don't have a preview of the pictures. Also the details, Date picture taken and Dimensions, aren't there anymore, and I can't move or rename the files anymore. Uptill now I only had this with pictures, but as I tried to find a solution, I tried it with a txt file too, with the same result. Here step by step:
1.Creation of text file.
2.Moving to other folder -> no problem
3.Tried to open or rename it -> Acces denied.
The strange thing is that this only happens when I move or cut and paste the file, when I copy and paste the file the problem doesn't occur...
Any suggestions???

I have a similar problem (not sure if it is same) and this solution didn't seem to work. I have Windows XP professional edition. I have about 200 mp3 files in 1 folder. They were working till recently. I can't play them anymore using WMP or iTunes. If I try to rename, move or copy them, I get a message
---------------------------
Error Copying File or Folder
---------------------------
Cannot copy <<fname>>: Access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected
and that the file is not currently in use.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
My disk is not full or write-protected, and the file is not in use. The files are stored under folders in My Music under My Documents.
Any more suggestions, please on what I need to do to get access to the files?

If that doesn't work or you get a message about "access denied" and something about "permissions," follow the steps in the MS KB article, How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP to get to your files.
The "Read only" setting on folders is meaningless and Windows ignores it. Check any folder (not file) on the drive and you'll see they're all marked "read only." Nobody but Microsoft programmers know why.

Tryin to access hard drive
I have a friends Sony Vaio model PCG-4A1P. It's a small notebook. It wont load windows anymore and just wont boot-up. I want to access the hard drive to remove his data before I reformat. How can I go about doing that. Or can I do that if it wont start up?

 Thanks alot... Wow!
Tried to figure this so many times in the 2001 forward past
Had to use the safe mode... Is there a way to do this in normal mode if the security tab is missing?
Thanks!
