XP the memory hog?

Help! I recently upgraded to XP home and I'm appalled at the huge chunk of memory used. I have a P4 with 512Mb of memory and after startup, with no programs open, I have 270Mb available for use. Is that obscene or what? What about all those processes running in the BckGrnd,eg. svchost(30Mb)? I'm not on any network. I need advice on what can be turned off without crashing the system. I'm trying "Startup Monitor", but it doesn't control all those BckGrnders. I can't imagine trying to run XP on 128Mb of RAM!
Thanks, Robert C.

That is normal.

Also check out Tweaks and Tips to improve the performance.

Robert c, that is strange. When I boot XP with no startup progs, it uses 128 MB without any tweaks. I've seen this number on various sites and posts. Yes, XP is a hog, however, your memory usage is double what it should be. svchost is the core of many XP processes. Do not be tempted to delete these files. Another site for tweaks is www.blkviper.com

XP with just itself running uses 80-90 MB or RAM.

Robert you do have items that are starting when you boot.
Click Start and then Run and type msconfig in the open box.
That will open the System Configuration Utility.

Under the Startup tab, all those app's start on boot. Then go to the Services tab, and on bottom of window, there is a box to check called Hide all Microsoft services, when the box is checked it hides all the MS services and only shows yuo 3rd party ones.

I am sure you will have a number of items under each tab that you did not know were starting when you boot your machine.
