Icons not opening with double click

Hi Guys,

I need your help.

I can no longer open the desktop icons by double clicking. The same goes for all icons in the control panel.

To open programmes I have to click on the start menu and single click the required application to open.

Can anyone please advise how to correct this problem so that I can open by double clicking as normal.

Thought it might be something to do with the mouse settings but cannot open this in the control panel.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards.

Satfanni.

it might be your mouse settings if you changed them
Just go to control panel
Right click the mouse icon and click open (not left double click)
If it not in the settings let me know

Thanks for the reply bbeard67.

I tried changing the mouse settings (lower speed...etc) to no avail.

Anyway I managed to sort out the problem.

For some reason part of my McAfee security software was interfering with the mouse functions. I disabled the McAfee privacy service and bingo the mouse is now working perfectly.

All other McAfee security software is still turned on (e.g. anti virus, firewall, spam blocker...etc).

Has anyone else got the latest McAfee software installed and if so do they have similar problems.

Does anyone know a solution to this problem as I would obviously prefer all aspects of the McAfee security software to be running.

Thanks once again for any advice.

Regards.

Check your add remove programs list for these updates
and remove them

if this is a home pc you don't need these hotfixes that cause problems with "real time scanning"

Windows XP Hotfix (SP1) Q811493 or
Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q811493

Microsoft has fixed this upgrade but see if it works without adding the new fix in to be sure that this is the problem.

From the microsoft site

You may experience slower computer performance after you install the 811493 (MS03-013) security update package on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), or after you upgrade to SP1 on a Windows XP-based computer on which the 811493 security update was previously installed. This problem may be more likely to occur if you use some features of some third-party programs, such as antivirus programs. For example, this problem may occur if your antivirus program is configured to scan all files when you open (or you run) them. This is sometimes called "real-time" scanning.

bbeard67,

Thanks again for your reply.

I checked the add/remove programmes in the control panel but the two hotfixes you refer to are not listed.

So it's back to the drawing board.

I guess I can live with this but it would be nice to have all McAfee services running on my PC.

Would a system restore solve my problem or could I uninstall and reinstall McAfee?

Thanks again for your help. I'm a bit of a novice at this game but I'm keen to learn

Problem sorted (I hope )

Re-booted PC and was advised that an update was available for McAfee Privacy Service.

Updated this service and re-booted again and everything now working well. All programmes now opening with double clicks. All security services (including Privacy Service) now running on McAfee.

Thanks again bbeard67 for your input and advice.

Regards.
