How Do You Restrict Programs For Different Users?

Is there a way on Win XP Pro to restrict what programs each user can use when they log in?

Not that I have found.

You can restrict what that user does in certain ways by lower his status from administrator to something else.

I don't think so.

In fact, there are 2 types of users, administrator or limited.
I am having problemas with limited accounts... I can't even connect to the internet with one of those accounts. It's like a Guest account.

Boot into safe mode

open explorer

right click on the executable for the program you wish to restrict access to

click properties

click security

set permissions

Actually there are more than 3 types of users in XP:

Administrators
Backup Operators
Guests
HelpServicesGroup
Network Configuration Operators
Power Users
Replicator
Remote Desktop Users
Users

For a detailed explanation on all these go here:

or if you don't want to put into Safe Mode to get the security panel

Go to My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, View Tab

At the bottom, uncheck "Use simple file sharing" and you now have the security tab.

I knew about that types of user accounts, but I thought they were from my previous version (win2000 pro).

Are they working ok on WinXP or they are just some useless descriptions?

Hmmm...I did that and I still don't have the Security tab. I have General, Version, and Compatibility. What's going on here?

Sturm,

In order to have the security tab in windows (nt, 2000, xp) your hardrive must be NTFS.

Not so.. I have Fat32 but have the tabs....

I think you have to have simple sharing disabled. It allows for more robust security.
