c2 transitions harm performance

XP SP1, Quicktime 6.5.1, Athlon XP 2000+, ECS L7VMM2 Mainboard
Quicktime movies frequently pause momentarily, no dropped frames. Using the performance tool, I see that each time the movie pauses, the %C2 time shoots to 100, and C2 Transitions/sec drops from a nominal 800 to 300-400. Processor load during this time varies between 20-30%. The pauses appear random in nature - or at least I have not found any correlation with various counters or externally visible events. Pages/sec does decrease inversely to %C2; also, the performance tool itself pauses its updates during the max C2 time.
Why is my system entering C2 so often, especially under 'load'? Is there a way to prevent this?
