rewriter not working!

When windows Xp is running the tray wont open in the rewriter i have (fujitsu 8x4x32) and when it does it either records only half a disc or gets to 2% then stops.
NOW when i reboot i get a message at the bootup that says the following:
PRI MASTER: 3.39 ST340823A
Ultra DMA Mode-4, S.M.A.R.T Capable but disabled

Sec Master: sf03 SAMSUNG DVD- ROM SD-6125

Sec Slave Drive - ATAPI Incompatible

Press F1 to Resume

meaning that now it says that the rewriter ISNT compatible after using for various years!!?
(the ATAPI Incompatible being the FUJITSU 8x4x32 rewriter.)
Also now in the box, MY COMPUTER the cdrom now doesnt appear as if it doesnt exist.
Every now and then i manage to open the tray cos the system starts ok but only if the computer isnt used for a while.
Is there a way of downloding a software update for this hardware from internet (on windows XP) if i can get the cdrom to show in MY COMPUTER?
Cheers, skoundrel....

You probably have your cdrom listed in your bios on the sec master or you have it on the gray connector of an ata cable (in which case you should change the cdrom to cable select). Changing everything to auto (except for the harddrive if you want) should fix the problem

thanks guys!!

Iīll take a look at both solutions thanks, But the problem is that if the cdrom doesnt show in MY COMPUTER, how can i change it to auto?
Also is there a way of changing the region of the DVD? i obtained the computer from someone else and my options have gone to 0, so it says i cant change it again? Skoundrel.

You can try a firmware upgrade like below but if done incorrectly can cause the dvd player not to work at all

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=166

Or

Try a 30 day fully functional trial of DVD Region Free
available at the link above or below

rewriter still odd!!

Strange how the rewriter keeps connecting and disconnecting. every now and then the light on the drive lights up and the drive 'turns over'.
Itīll record a certain amount of cd (i'm trying to do a multisession data one), maybe 28% or even up to 70% the the drive cuts out and i get an error message (the drive must be connected if it starts to record no?) Also even though ive recorded 70% of the disc it wont let me see whats been recorded (is that cos its multisession and the disc has to be closed) or continue to write on the disc cos it didnt fully record the session.
The error message (though long winded) is the following:

No Autorun is simply a file that is ran when the CD is first scanned.
