Have u tryed to do windows update manually by going to

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

if not try that. For the java u could try downloading the latest version. For the dvd player check to see if it is muted by going

Start->all programs->accesories->entertainment->volume control and check that none are muted.

Other than that im all out of ideas

Thanks....but the update page just sits there doing nothing,
and yes, all the sound inputs are on.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Are you able to connect to any web sites?

Yes, I can connect, and have no trouble surfing. When I hit a site that wants a Java applet running, I get the message that my browser does not support Java (I.E. 6.0). That's the only problem I see when on the web.

If you are not on a network
Delete the file Hosts no file extension located in
C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

Either a spyware program or a virus has blocked the support site
from within this file.

If your on a network open the file in notepad and
commenting-out (place a # sign in front of the entry to comment out" the references to Microsoft and any other sites you know are fine like yahoo.com google.com etc
