Computer Keeps Rebooting

Alright, to begin with I run Windows XP (Home Edition). Last night we had a thunderstorm and all of the sudden a power surge happens (occurs frequently out here). After the thunderstorm passes I try to start up my computer again. Now everytime I try to start it up, it will go through its pattern till you get to the Windows XP Start-Up Window. After that gets done loading, it automatically shuts down and starts up again. This process repeats itself over and over time and time again.

Funny thing is, this never happened before. Also another funny thing is that I saw no lightning or heard no thunder.

A LOT of important things on my desktop computer (am currently on the laptop), so it would help if you guys could give some quick fix answers.

Sorry if I seem impatient, or if another post was already made like this. I just really need to get this fixed ASAP and don't want to spend $100's at a shop!

THANKS!

The restart loop is the default setting when Windows encounters a critical error. Have you tried starting in 'Safe Mode' ? (Hold down F8 during restart. choose 'Safe Mode' from the menu.)

Hopefully Windows should start in a very limited mode (no hardware drivers). For starters, turn off the auto-restart setting:

1.Start - Control panel - Performance & Maintenance - System.

2. In the bottom pane (Startup & Recovery) click Settings.

3. Disable the option to 'Automatically Restart'. and OK it.

Now go to Device Manager and check for any exclamation marks which means that device is not working or there is a driver problem. Most likely your modem is fried, so uninstall it's software, remove it from Device manager, and unplug it. Now restart and see what happens.

Get yourself a surge protector strip to plug all your PC gear in, one with a phone-line protector as well as mains sockets.
