DVD-ROM and CDRW Drivves have disappeared

Somebody Please Help! I'm running Windows XP Pro and as far as I know there isn't any reason the problem I have should have happened....My DVD-ROM and CDRW drives show up in Device Manager but not in Explorer. Device Manager gives me the following error: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)". I've tried updating the driver and the system tells me it can't find or locate a better driver to use and leaves everything as is. I also tried uninstalling the drivers and hoped upon rebooting they would reinstall, but no such luck. I even have gone as far as physically disconnecting the drives and rebooting then shutting down and reconnecting the drives hoping they would be detected as new hardware and reinstall but again no such luck. I'm out of ideas as to what to do next other than calling Microsoft and paying them $35.00 to tell me how to fix it. Anyone with any ideas as to what I can do?

Try going to the manufacturers site (of the device, drive, etc,) and downloading the driver file. Save it to "My Documents" [write the file name down] so you can navigate back to it. If I remember correctly, you can then go back to the Device Manager and tell it to look for a new driver in the location you specify [the file in "My Documents"].
There is also a way to search for a Driver at Windows Update but for now I won't delve into that. .

DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives disapeared

Tru the following fix -

Start - Run - regedit.

look for the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

When you found it, delete THE DATA ONLY, in the "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters". AGAIN! DO NOT DELETE THE ACTUAL KEYs BUT ONLY THE DATA IN THEM!!!

When done, close regedit and reboot!

Obviously if you are not 100% sure of what you are doing, DON'T!!! I had the same problem and this fix solved it.

Good luck, Oren
