How do I keep some tasks from loading on bootup? For instance, I do not use ms messenger and there is a task always loaded. Do I really need all 40 some tasks running?

that's a bit high, most programs give you an option not to run at startup

Have you scanned for spyware and adware

Run Msconfig on your system to see what is running in the background during startup.

Click Start
Click Run
Type MSCONFIG
Click Startup tab
The system will list all the applications that starts up in the background once you have booted your system.

Just uncheck the items that you no longer want to run in the
backgound

Click apply
The next time you re-start your system that application will no longer be launch during startup.
