Problems after running spyware sweepers

While this maybe a coincident, I ran both Spybot S&D and Adaware Sunday night (like I've done successfully many many times before). After restart, I could not get on my Windows XP machine. I still can't. It logs on, but after clicking on one of the user icons, it immediately logs me off saying "saving your settings...."-
I tried logging on using both the Safe Mode and "Last Known setting", but it does the same in both modes.

I believe I activated a trojan, but don't know how to get on the machine to scan and clean it.

Can anyone help please??

Your computer is caught in the "endless boot loop." It's almost always caused by a damaged registry.

Your best bet is to boot from the Windows CDROM or boot disks. Setup will copy files to your hard drive and you will then be presented with an option to press "R" to repair the installation using the recovery console or install Windows. Select the option to install Windows. When you get to the license agreement, click "agree". You will then find yourself at a screen that has another repair option if you press "R". Do this.

Windows will then delete some files, copy some files and then reboot. When the system reboots, make sure that you do not boot from the boot disks or CDROM. Windows will then load what appears to be the GUI portion of setup. This is where I nearly had a heart attack the first time I did this. DO NOT WORRY - Windows is installing over your previous installation, not replacing it despite what it looks like. You will even have to enter the CD Key again.

Once you finish the repair process, it will reboot again and your system should come up normally. If so, you may need to activate Windows again and make sure that you reapply any service packs or security updates.

I just tried rebooting using the disc and it did the trick!
Thanks a bunch.
For the record, I am running XP home edition, SP 1.

It appears that there is some sort of a persistent spyware which still haunts my machine.

As I noted in my first post, I have used both Adaware and spybot successfully for the past 6 months, but since this Sunday, I seem to have aquired a rather nasty bug which even adawar and spybot can't fix.

Got any advise on that?

I' just ran Adaware and it identified 14 entries as "bad", some of which could not be deleted. It asked to delete them upon restart which is excatly the sequence of events which lead to the problem on Sunday which I ended up fixing by rebooting though disc.
Are there other programs in the market to help with this NEW problem?

a good on-line virus scan could be helpful, onboard virus scanners can become corrupt or miss some things.
being you use spyware scanners already, do you happen to know what the name of the spyware "bug" you have is, or the process name that is running?

I just read another thread with the same problem.
It appears to be called BlazeFind spyware.
I refrained from actually deleting the thing fearing that it might do the same to my machine again. But, according to the thread, I had already deleted the spyware and my problem stemed from that very deletion.

It's not that the sweepers can't detect and delete the bug, it appears to alter the registry upon deletion so that you can't log on.

There should be a law against this type of cyber terrorism!

http://www.scanspyware.net/info/BlazeFind.htm

http://sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/a...blazefind.html

both removal instructions require registry editing, be very careful and remember to backup before you do it.
