System Processes question

(Windows XP home)

Very recently I downloaded Windows XP service pack 2, which managed to send my computet into a frenzy, at which point I did a system restore, and got it back to a stable state. However, I have noticed that since then, my number of system processes seems to be really big, and I have noticed a slight slowing in boot up, which I attribute to this. Before the service pack was added, my comp was running 35 system processes very nicely, with no slow-down at all. I use F-secure anti virus, backweb, and management agent, which I gather adds a lot of system processes to the system, but now I am up to 42 and the system seems to be booting more slowly once logged into windows. Can anyone advise me on how to bring my number of processes down safely so that I dont create problems for my system?

Many Thanks.

You have to check what processes are being loaded on startup.

Click on run, and type 'msconfig' without the quotes.

Then click on the startup tab and deselect any processes that you know you don't need. If you are unsure what some processes are, type the name of the process into google, or ask about them on this forum.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks for the quick reply. Ok.. these are the ones that I'm not sure about:

RUNDLL32
FSM32
LVCOMS
LogiTray
Realsched

Something else confusing me - in startup, i only have 10 boxes checked, yet I have 42 processes running... is this correct?

FSM32 - F-secure managment
I don't know what this is. Is it a program you have installed?

LogiTray - Logitech Image Studio - installed with Logitech QuickCams This can also be deselected unless you use it all of the time.

Realsched - this is for real player, you can safely deselect this, as you don't need it running all of the time.

Rundll - this usually runs when you have began loading a program, you sould deselect this but if it causes problems just select it again.

lvcoms.exe is associated with the Logitech QuickCam series hardware.
This can be deselected unless you need it on all the time.

Thje processes that you can't deselect are system processes and are required.

You should also download and run Ad-Aware
This will catch any adware or spyware processes on your computer.

Hope this helps.

Thankyou very much, everything seems to still be running smoothly. Thanks again for your time, i really appreciate it.
and BTW, the FSM32 is the F-secure management system: I run a corporate version of F-secure given to me by my university, and that comes as part of it.
