Weird problem in Win XP

Can anyone help with this annoying problem i am experiencing?

Almost every game such as Battlefield, Need for Speed underground, Sim City etc.. when i load it up it will flick back to the windows desktop and still loads in the background - when i maximise the game it will return back to windows.. argh! have i got some kind of virus? I have done a scan and nothing is there..

Can anyone help me out? Thanks!
