workstation shuts down

xp loads as far as desktop and then closes down completely
please help me!!

Are you getting any errors?
Does it shutdown or restart?
Did you just install any updates , upgrades?
Will it start in safe mode?

Hi.., thanks for your prompt response I get a black dos screen which flashes up momentarily then as it starts to load task bar applications error message says task cannot open because workstation is closing down.. then it closes. I can boot in safe mode. Thanks again ... Michelle

Disabling the “restart on system failure” feature may permit the exact cause to be isolated: Right-click on My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab. Under “Startup & Recovery,” click Settings. Under “System Failure,” uncheck the box in front of “Automatically restart.”
