taskbar icon problem

The taskbar doen not show internet connection icon or any other plug and play device icon (like pen drive) when connected. I have tried in network connection - show icon in notification area when connected; even in taskbar manager - always show network connection icon. None seems to work. I think the system file that controls the monitoring of these processes or the taskbar itself is corrupted or deleted (?by virus? although thoroughly scanned with latest versions of norton and avg). Kindly help regarding which process or system file controls this processes to reinstall it or any other way to correct the problem. Thanx.

Download xp_pastitems.vbs and double click it after it's downloaded.

That should reset the icons in the system tray so you can configure them how you want.

If you have an anti virus program running and it alerts you when you download the file, don't worry. I've used that fix several times and it is not a virus.

Yes, but that doesn't seem to help either.

Zooropa, have you tried an online anti-virus program.
This seems to catch everything that McAfee, Norton and others
miss, including Adware, Malware, Trojan Horses...

http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

BitDefender online Scan/Clean

Works Wonders! If it won't clean it, it will tell you where it is!

Long shot.

Might be a bit like the shelliconcache problem with other OS's so try this.

1. Delete the IconStreams and PastIconsStream values from the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify

2. Open Task Manager, click the Processes tab, click Explorer.exe, and then click End Process.

3. In Task Manager, click File, click New Task, type explorer, and then click OK.
