Angry dvd drive in bios but not in MyComputer or Device manager

hi...pleeez help.....i had checked all other forums...my DVD-ROM(E: ) drive which is my secondary slave....cos my DVD-RW(D: ) drive is my secondary master....both the drives show up in BIOS and show up while the computer is booting up....on the welcome screen i can log in and the desktop loads and everything as normal...so fas so good!!....but when i go into My Computer my DVD-RW (D: ) shows but my slave drive ...DVD-ROM (E: )...does not....the same is when i go into device manager....my master drive shows but not the slave............................................. ...

so when i open up Control Panel and click add hardware...the computer searches and then i tick YES for hardware already conneected.....both drives show up in the list..and guess wot....it then shows up in My Computer and Device manager .....

But when i restart or switch my computer off and back on the process starts again....the DVD-ROM drive is missing....the DVD-ROM drive is generic and only sows up as VER 7.50 IDE DVD-ROM 16x....

i have tried uninstallin and reinstalling....have changed registry but still no joy.....the drive used to work fine until i installed several bits of software like roxio 7 ,nero, macromedia dreamweaver, flash...couldnt tell u exactly when it happened as its been like this for2 weeks now...and i am desperate please help my system is....

amd 3200
1024 ram
256mb ATI all in wonder radeon 9200
200gb HDD

Are u sure the jumpers are set properly on both drives (ie one set to slave, other set to master?. Alternatively, if using an 80-wire data cable (as opposed to the old 40-wire type), you could try setting both drive jumpers to CSEL (cable-select) which leaves the system to decide which is slave/master according to their position on the cable (blue connector plugs into mobo, grey connector determines master, black connector determines slave.
