Windows XP Solutions - An Outline - PLEASE READ

Update!!!! (finally...)

I've moved the whole guide to my website. It's much easier for me to organize there, and it's easier to explain some parts (with pictures and such).

If anyone has any questions or comments, please feel free to reply, or send me an e-mail at ngeraedts <at> gmail <dot> com. I'm always happy to recieve feedback or suggestions.

Cheers!

If you're using Firefox, don't forget to keep it patched,, too.

Instructions for getting the security patch for Firefox, released Oct. 1, can be found here.

As Firefox, and other browsers, gain in popularity, their vulnerabilities will be targeted so be sure to keep yourself aware of security patches as they come out.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm kinda bummed out that more people haven't replied to this.

I'd really like people to read this first and use it to try to solve their problems.

Anyone else have any input? Suggestions?

I don't mention any problems regarding adware/spyware in P2P client programs because P2P programs often involve "illegal" downloading of programs and multimedia.

My best suggestion to you is to remove the incriminating software and run the spyware scanners again. Legit programs are the best way to go in terms of not having problems. Many "programs" that you may download from these P2P clients will be infected themselves and will cause you more headaches than solutions.

I did mention that Kazaa, one of the most well known P2P clients, is completely filled with various types of spyware.

Everything that you own becomes much, much better when you've actually worked to buy it.

Re: Xp

Thanks for the useful information. Sygate has a personal free firewall if you want to add that to your defense software. It works well with adaware, without conficts.

Hi there,

I've been trying to get in touch with the Tool as to either relaxing the 10,000 character restriction on my post, or being able to bump up a follow up post to sit right after the original. I'm currently sitting at about 9,800 characters, so after I add pretty much anything, it gets rejected because I'm over the limit.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Already asked, no answer....

Re: Windows Updates

"Let it scan your computer once more and then install all updates from here".

There are mixed opinions regarding this issue. Some regulars on other quality forums

do, some don't...The main view is that if you have a software firewall and AV

installed, updated at all times and properly configured, coupled with a hardware NAT

and SPI enabled firewall router, there is no need for updates, especially IE updates.

Re: SP2

I concur.....

Re: Virii:

Always disable System Restore prior to running an AV scan!!!!!! Re-enable it after if

you wish to.

to turn on and turn off System Restore in Windows XP

Common sense is cool, however, sense is not common......LOL

One last thing about virii is to dl, install and update, very regularly, McAfee's

AVERT Stinger, located at the following link. It sorts the men out from the boys: -

Re: Adware/Spyware

Once again, disable System Restore prior to running any scans and re-enable it after

if you wish to.

Also, if you want to dl M$ updates, patches, etcetera, then you will need to use IE.

Regarding Services, pay particular attention to Dependencies!!!!!!!!!!!
