Unhappy Odd keyboard installation problem

Hi there, new to the forums so will greatly appreciate any help you might be able to give.

I'm trying to do a clean install of XP pro SP2 on a budget rig i've put together but i've run into an odd problem that i've never seen before. After booting off the CD the installation happily chugs along until it finally arrives at the "Welcome to Setup" page at which point i would normally tap enter to continue (like i've done many times before). However, for some reason as soon as this screen is reached the keyboard stops functioning. I can see the numlock light go off and i get no response when i hit enter or any key. i've tried a couple of keyboards that are definitely ok, they even work on this rig up until this screen.

I'm stuck, any clues?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Its probably something really mundane and i'm being an idiot but i just can't figure it out.

I'd check in BIOS for appropriate settings to be sure they are enabled correctly.

bios

I've had a scan through the bios and as far as i can tell, everything's good to go, but, if there's anything in particular i should be looking for in the bios please tell me.

Its the damndest thing. Of all the stupid problems to halt an installation.

Is this a new motherboard? Did you set the "default" and "save to CMOS" before exiting?
Can you post some specs please.

specs appeal

Sorry i didn't provide more info earlier. Anyway, the mobo is an Abit KT7A Raid (not new) which has been running an Athlon 1 Ghz happily for some time. The only things that have changed since it was running last are a new case, an extra 128mb of ram (384mb now) and a different hard drive (20 gig ibm) that was previously running my main rig without a hitch. Oh, and its running a crappy ol' 8mb S3 vid card. Apart from that i'm not sure what to tell you. I've probably missed some specs out so tell me whatever you think you need to formulate some ideas, cus im out of them.

Thanks again Doc!

Is the keyboard USB by chance? If it's USB you may need to enable USB support in Bios (the default setting for this is "O S"....if it's "Bios" you need to change it), look under peripherals. If it's not then I would try setting the BIOS to the default settings and saving to CMOS before exiting.

When the keyboard stops functioning does the mouse as well?

Something else to check is that the IDE cable is plugged in correctly to the motherboard. If it's the original then the "blue" end must be connected to the board.
