problems with windows explorer

Hi,
When i am using explorer i can open and close existing files no problem, However when i want to ad a new file, either by using file, add file, or right click to add file all i get is " windows has encountered a problem and needs to close.
This also happens with any of the main headings, eg file, edit etc.

Is it possible to reinstall XP to repair this wit out losing all the other settings etc.

If you have an XP Disc (full version) you can do a system repair.
You simply put the disk in and proceed as if you are installing "new". You will be given the option to repair upfront, but you need to pass on this one and opt for the second one found further in. XP will replace all system files while leaving your personal stuff intact. You will need your key numbers at hand and will have to re update your machine (Windows updates) when done.
