Windows Xp And New External Hard Drive

I have purchased a new ext hard drive.

When i try and install a copy of windows xp on it everything is ok until i try and install on the hard drive.

It looks as like the computer is not recognising it as a 2nd hard drive??

How can i recify this problem

Please help as i am new to ext hard drives.

I'm not quite getting the jist of your post.....but here goes....!
If you want to start from the external hardrive you will need to enable the boot order correctly in BIOS (it may appear as "unknown device").
