If this was a one time deal message I would not worry about it.
What may have cause that message to get display is anybody guess.

If you purchase this pc with windows xp already installed and its working fine then don't worry about that one time message.

I have no idea why you would have receive that message and that is probably the reason why no one else has reply to your posting. Don't take it personal..

The information you posted did not provide enough information for anyone to research your issue further. If your system is working and the message has not re-appear then I would not focus on this issue further.

Just a thought...

no, it happens every time

that "starting windows 98" comes up every time i encounter that screen. it always says it's starting windows 98 even though i have a windows xp machine.

don't understand it, but i guess i can live with it. as i said, it never happened before i loaded my system restore disks the second time.

one problem may be that i didn't erase or delete what was already on there because my system had locked up and all it would read was "system not found", so i really had to just load the 6 disks again.

thanks for your reply and support.

grateful

When you perform a factory recovery of XP, it uses the same boot routine as a Windows 98 Startup Floppy in order to run the DOS utilities such as an image restore process (Norton Ghost or PowerQuest Drive Image). It actually says 'Starting Windows 98'
and this is quite normal for an XP image recovery.
