System error, The WIN16 subsystem

I' ve been having a problem with installing some software programs. The error message comes out: The WIN16 subsystem was unable to enter Protected Mode, DOSX.EXE must be in your AUTOEXEC>NT and present in your PATH.
Does anyone know how to go arround it. I just bought a scanner that supposed to be win XP compatible and it still came out.
Thanks for your help.

To me it sounds like the drivers aren´t XP-compatible.Check them again.

Yep! the installer thinks it's on a NT machine.
Look at this (XP not named as a system)
