XP - ME ethernet network problem

I am having difficulting setting up a home ethernet network between my laptop and desktop. Now, my network used to work through a crossover cable. But then I bought a cable modem and a hub. The internet connection is being shared successfully between the two computers [Desktop on XP, Laptop on ME], indicating that they are properly networked.
Yet my home network refuses to work; the computers refuse to communicate with each other:

"\\Portable\shareddocs is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found."

Both computers are set to enable file sharing, they already share an internet connection. The problem occurs when I try both fixed IPs and automatically-determined addresses. My logon name is the same on both computers and they are both logged in. I've even redone the network wizards.
What am I doing wrong?

hi you need to run the xp disk on each computer, insert the xp disk into cd drive and let it auto run, ther should be an option to set up home or office network select this, follow on scrteen instructions, but make sure the following is the same on each computer:

the workgroup name is the same 4 both computers

in the network options make sure the same components, protocols etc are installed on each machine

also make sure the your firewall is configured properly, let it allow the ip of your other comp and vice versa.#

hope this helps

hi you may need 2 run the set up home or office network program which is on the win xp, put the cd in the drive, let it autorun, and select set up office&home network option, this has to be run on eaxh computer, also check your firewalls on each pc allow u to access each computer, get your computers ip addresses and allow access, also check that each computer has the same components and protocols installed (see the network properties), also make sure during the network setup that each computer has the same workgroup name.

if u use the help and support option in xp and search the topicit gives good instruction on what 2 do.
