Speeding up internet connection on broadband.

I don't know if this is a post for the forum but I am getting nowhere with Aol.

I have not long taken on broadband with Aol. Im on plantinum which is 1024 kbps speed.

I got this so that I could download movies. I just started downloading a movie today and was shocked that it was going to take a day and a half. (Just under 700mb file size)

Is there anyway of tweaking the speed up?

Emma.

(Im using windows xp home, with Aol 9.0)

Something very wrong with your setup.

With a bandwidth of 1024 kilobits/s, that equates to a download rate of approx. 128 kilobytes/sec (1024/8), or 7.5 Mb/minute, which is 450 Mb per hour. It should take no more than 2 hours to download a 700Mb file at the bandwidth you say you are on.

A Google search for 'Free broadband speed test' will give you loads of replys. As for the speed. I'd get myself to Live Help and get it sorted. DO NOT let them fob you off with an email.
If it's not a problem with your telephone line then they are clearly not giving you the service you are paying for.

yes afriad so its me again.

You won't believe it but this forum has been more help than Microsoft..and they build the software!

Yes I have just done a speed test and it works out that it is working at near right speed.

Its the place that I am downloading it from that's the problem. Its a P2P share network thing and when I am downloading I am downloading from somebody on a dial up connection.

(If anybodys got any good sites for downloading movies let us know )

Thanks for the help and sorry for bombarding you with questions..

Best Wishes
Emma.

That does not surprise me in the slightest.

A word to the wise using p2p. If you get 'hit', you may find yourself coming here more often than you want: -

I hear that Imesh is the one for films but i also hear that it can take over a week to download a film as well.
I would reccomend not using any p2p file sharing service. I installed Kazza when i first got my pc and ended up having to do a new install of the OS to get rid of it.

Thanks for that link....definately worth reading.

When using P2p though I have been carefull and quite selective.

I used to use Kazaa yonks ago which totally trashed my old computer with the spyware. I am using a programe called Limewire which has no spyware, no adware and no trojan horse things and I have also got the latest norton antivirus and firewall just to be on the safe side.

I have to admit thought that you have to be carefull because every week I hear of stories where the music industry and others are taking people into legal law actions againts "serial uploading" as they call it.

Bit Torrent is another very good application to download large files. It allows a user to share the portion of the file(s) that he/she has to the rest of the world.

Have a look here.

As for a good site to download torrent files from go to www.suprnova.org.

Be sure that you don't go to www.supernova.org or www.suprnova.net or .com. These sites will tell you that you need to pay $20/month, and the will simply redirect you to the (proper) .org site.

Cheers.
