computer fails to load

Dear folks,

Hoping you could help my wife and I with a problem we're having:

Turn on the computer and we get this message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
System32\Drivers\Nfts.sys

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

Sometimes I get this screen too:

CA81020A.10A.0048.P15.0109051551

The computer will try and reboot itself as many times as nescessary to turn on. This can sometimes take hours. Sometimes I am directed to press a key to try and get it to boot.

This message also appears:

Dell Dimension 2100
BIOS Version A14
Intel (R) Celeron processor, 1.10 Ghz
256 MB System RAM

Keyboard - Detected
Legacy Mouse - Detected
USB Legacy - Enabled

Fixed Disk 0: WDC WD200BB-75CLBO
(UDMA= 66MHz)

ATAPI CD-ROM CRD-8482B

Press <Del> to Resume

I do not know which disk that came with the computer is the original setup cd-rom, or what else to do, or if it is nescessary. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Best,
Bob

You need to insert your xp cd and do a repair install. This is what the message is telling you to do. If your pc came with xp built in, you should have received a cd as well. Insert this cd and do what your pc tells you to do. This should start a repair install but i think you will loose any files you have saved.

I would also recommend installing more RAM on your system as xp needs quite a lot. 512mb would be a lot better!
Good luck

Thanks Vidster,

I will try to do just that this weekend. Got a question for you thought...I looked at the CD's that came with my computer, nothing stands out as an XP disk. I'm not quite sure what to look for, I have a CD for drivers, etc. Can you enlighten me just a bit so I know I am on the right track? Thanks in advance for your or anyone's help.

Best,

Bob

The cd with the drivers on is the one you want (I'm guessing your pc came with xp pre-installed). This is what mine say's anyway.
When i insert the disk it opens a window with various icons (drivers etc). there should be one that says Autorun. Click on this and it should do the rest for you.
