Windows XP Home and Professional Edition's
(Including Beta Versions/120 day trials/OEM)

If you have purchased an OEM copy of Windows XP Home or Pro (this is the type normally shipped with new computers, without retail packaging) this cannot be used to upgrade any previous version of Windows. You would need to perform a clean install of the new operating system.

xWIMx, without belaboring the subject, if the program is not on the Home Edition CD, but is on the XP Pro CD, installing that extra could render your system unusable, or at the least cause problems down the road. There are some tools that are cross platform as are some programs such as FrontPage etc that are on certain CD's, but that's the extent of it.

How Do I Use Upgrade Advisor?
It's a simple process:
1.
Check for Upgrade Eligibility: Find out if your version of Windows is eligible for an upgrade to Windows XP Professional.
2.
Download the Upgrade Advisor: If your version is eligible for upgrade, download the Upgrade Advisor. You can choose to save the file to your hard disk and run it locally, or open it directly from the Web.
