XP can't recognize my modem?!

Please help me!

I have instal XP on my PC and everything work except my modem Ambient MD 5628D-L-C. I have drivers, that's not problem!
Problem is that XP recognized it as "PC Simple communication device" (something like that). When I try to update drivers, it's says that file .inf does not contain hardware details!?!?!
By the way, my motherboard is cheap Matsonic MS 9037C.

What to do? Is that problem with motherboard or XP or what?!
I'm helpless...
Somebody....?

PS: I've posted same thread in Hardware problems, because I don't know where it belongs! Sorry...

did the drivers come with the modem on a cd? if so was the modem new?
did you download the drivers?
have you tried the modem in a different pci slot, or make sure it was fully seated?
have you tried going to the device manager, and installing the driver manually from the location you have it?
sometimes it helps to copy drivers from the cd to the drive...then directing the install.

In addition to play_the_odds post, make sure the driver folder has dll files in them. Or go to the webite and get a driver from there. It also helps to download a self-executable file (.exe).

Good Luck!

I know what you're saying. The modem is not new, but it worked perfectly at Windows 98. I've downloaded drivers from Intel support web page, they are good and has original number for my modem, although they're not executable files.

I also tried to change it manualy, but the problem is that it is not recognized as the modem. It says "PCI Simple communication device". When I tried to fix it manualy, to change it into modem in a hardware list, it shows me a warning (something like I'm chaning hardware into wrong device, bla, bla...)

It's very strange and never happened before. Usually it recognized it as some other modem, but never as some other device....

When you tried to install the driver the very first time during installation, did windows give you an error message saying the driver is not digitally signed and might be unsafe to install? if you did, the modem itself might not be combatible with windows xp . you can tell if it is by looking for the "designed for windows xp" symbol on the corner of the box. try to find a driver that's compatible with windows xp. If that's not the case, then you might have to go into the bios and look for the modem wake up option (it should be under the peripherals or components section)
and turn that on. If all above fails, then take it in for repairs.

Good Luck!
