Unknown problem
I have been having a problem somewhere in the communication between my cd drivers and the rest of the computer. Recently I have been unable to install any programs which require cds and receive various error messages such as "Couldn't initialize the input system. Please try rebooting your computer." Of course I have tried that, many times. I have also updated the cd drivers, Directx, Windows XP, and anything else I could think of.
I've ran virus scans, spyware scans, looked through all of the services I could find reference to online, and tried various configurations, to no noticable difference.
Previously I was only unable to play any games after they were installed; the first day, or before the first rebooting, they would run fine, but after I could not use them.
Programs which only need to verify that the cd is in the drive are fine, but if any part of the program requires the cd to function all seems to fail.
I have no problems with copying or writing cds or playing music cds, it seems only programs which require cd-driven installation.
I have Windows XP home edition on a three year old Dell computer, and can find any other information that might help, but right now I am at a complete loss and have, after spending the last two hours searching for other possible problems online, run out of ideas. I would greatly appreciate any help.
