user accounts missing at logon

I have today booted my PC. It loads up as normal to the XP welcome screen where you select the user name to logon. However the usernames (accounts) are not showing up at all.

I have been unable to access the recovery console as I can't remember the administrator password

Instead I have tried a repair via the option to install windows option. When I tried to do this some files were unable to be copied across, they were the printupg.inf, prodspec.ini, progman.cnt and shgina.dll files.

I proceeded with the re-install without these files. However once the re-install was complete I still had the same problem.

I simply cannot access the XP system, I have also hit crl, alt, del and tried to login that way, but no success.

I cant do a clean install as there is data on the c:/ that I can't afford to use.

I can't even get the command prompt so that I can try and copy this data to a cd.

btw the pc is standalone not networked.

Is their anything I can do?

Regards
Simon

I tried to launch xp in xp and it didn't work just locked up. I don't recall having a command prompt at any stage.

were you able to get into safe mode?
tap the F8 key from the moment you turn the system power on until you get to the boot options screen.

Yes I selected safe mode with command prompt but after a few seconds it locked up - at no time do I get to see the command prompt!

i reread your post several times, is it possible to take your harddrive and slave it to another system so you can rescue your files, or install xp over without formatting?
if you do either of those you will need the info on the link below to gain access to your files if the account was password protected.

this other link will help if you install a double copy of xp.

I had this problem and it was caused by a corrupted sam file.
I resolved it by copying c:\windows\repair\sam to c:\windows\system32\config

This allowed me to log in.

I then used system restore to go back to a time when my PC was Ok and I was back to where I was before I had the problem.

I was able to copy the file using a tool I downloaded from bootdisk.com called ntfsboot. It cost me £2.33 for the tool ($4).
