error when instaling drivers

I just recently upgraded from windows 98 to windows xp with windows xp with sp2 home version software. The installation perform fine but now I am trying reinstall my software and drivers for my geforce4 mx 4000 video card and soundblaster live sound card and each time I try to run the Installation cd or driver update patch from nvidia, intelliwizard will start to run and then stop giving me an error message saying closing ikernal, unable to find rpc server. What is the rpc server and what can I do about this?
