How to make boot.ini system file again?

Hey everyone,

I ran into a small blip in my system that has caused me to scratch my head a little bit.

I recently purchased a SanDisk Titanium USB drive and when I went to plug it in, it gave me problems. After digging around on the SanDisk website, it said that the problem may have arisen from the drivers not installing properly. I followed the instructions (which were to delete two registry keys related to USB devices), and rebooted.

When my computer restarted, I got a message that said

"Boot.ini not found or invalid. Booting from C:\Windows"

And then my computer booted as normal. When I got into Windows (everything was fine in terms of booting), I checked in msconfig as to what was up with the Boot.ini file and there was no boot.ini file available!!!

I went a looked under the system properties tab to find the startup options there, and when I selected the button to go there, Windows told me that there was no Boot.ini file to be found and asked me if I wanted to create a new one. I said yes (because I'd like to start my computer normally), and then I copied the boot.ini data from the MS Knowledge Base for XP Pro (what I'm running).

System restore (miraculously) didn't help with restoring the original file, so that suggestion's out the window.

My computer now starts up normally and everything is fine in terms of running, but I now have this Boot.ini file in my C: Drive and I'd like to return it to System file status (not just hidden).

Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I've now got a boot.ini file and all is well, except for the fact that the file is now simply a hidden file (not a hidden protected system file).

I'm trying to find a way of getting it back to it's original status.

why not just leave it as hidden? i think the only way to make it a system file is to go into command prompt and give it that attribute

Hi there,

Thanks for the pointing in the right direction RoSpider.

I remember having seen the attrib command somewhere, but I didn't know what to do with it. I managed to reset the status of my boot.ini file and all is back to normal.

Thanks a million!!!
