Resetting back to defaults after every shutdown

Just loaded a new install of XP Pro. What I have noticed is that the settings I set during last session have gone back to defaults. So my mouse settings, network wireless card, etc. all have to be reset again.

Is there some global switch that I am missing that will keep my changes in place at next startup???

You have to set your cache for this. Are you doing a "hard" shutdown? If this is the case then your cache will not be saved. Try a "soft" reboot.

Start
Turn Off Computer
Shutdown

Don't do anything let it do it automatically.

I'm not sure I understand. All my shutdowns are software shutdowns, not button pushes. Start > Turn Off Computer > Turn Off. Is that what you mean? Is this cache setting automatic, or do I need to do something?

It should be. Check for viruses and spyware.
