Red face Unabale to start in Safe Mode

Hi guys,

This is doing my head in. I can use XP Home OK in normal mode but trying to log in into Safe Mode will not let me do it. When pressing F8 and selecting Safe Mode it will go as far as the log-in screen after which it reboots. Selecting Safe Mode with networking enables me to click on Administrator after which it, yet again, reboots.

Steps taken so far:

1) Ran AVG and Adaware in normal mode without any signs of viruses or mal/ad ware. I also have Spywareblaster running;

2) Used the repair facility from my recovery CD to no avail;

3) Used Trend Micro Housecall with no viruses found.

Any help is very much appreciated as one day I might need Safe Mode!!!

Thanks

Try running sfc /scannow(note the space) from the run box.
Run checkdisk.

Tried both suggestions to no avail. When running sfc it asked me to insert the disk which I did. A lot of hard disk activity for about 4-5 mins. Ran check disk afterwards and tried to boot in Safe Mode...... guess what..... it still reboots at the same points.

Any further suggestions (bar a full format)?

Thanks

You can try running This online trojan scan. I would turn off system restore before running it as well.

Tried you suggestion but apart from this message:

Unable to scan C:\System Volume Information - Access is denied.

there were no infections found.

Anything else I can try?

Just to let you know that the problem has now been resolved. The way I resolved it, for those experiencing similar problems, was that I disabled the following two Microsoft Start Up services:

- Fax
- Print Spooler

I am now able to log into Safe Mode and it seems not to have caused any problems in Normal Mode either.

Result
