Try the following obtained from Annoyances.org, as per the following link, as it is a long thread. Naturally, backup the registry prior to making the change/s: -

re: Empty Device Manager

"The issue is security permissions in the registry. I cannot tell how they are lost
but I can tell you how to fix it short of having to re-install Windows!

You must use regedt32.exe in Windows 2000/XP (as I have not seen this problem posted
for any other operating system). Be very carefull making changes in the regisrty!

You must be logged on as a local administrator to perform this task:

1. Go to "Start", "Run", and enter "regedt32"
2. Maximize the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" window.
3. Scroll down to "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum"
4. With "Enum" selected click the "Security", "Permissions" menu.

Note: At this point you will probably notice there are no permissions on this key.

5. Click "Add".
6. Add the group "Everyone" and the user "SYSTEM".
7. Select "Everyone" and check "Read" ONLY!
8. Select "SYSTEM" and check "Full Control".
9. Click the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the window.
10. On the Advanced window check "Reset permissions on all child objects..."
11. Click "OK"
12. On the warning window click "Yes"
13. Close REGEDT32

You should now be able to see everything in Device Manager, Network Places Properties,
and Printers."

Good luck.......................

I have been working on this problem with Microsoft for a week and they could not tell me how to fix the problem. This fixed it in five minutes, again thank you.

Blank Device Manager

Been having the same problem..

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling SP2. (Device Manager doesnt work on either)

Tried reinstalling chipset drivers.

Full virus & Spyware scans - all clean.

Followed the instructions to the letter, but when i hit ok to apply changes I get the message. "Registry Editor could not set security in the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys" I click ok, and it doesnt solve the problem.

Help!?!

If the following doesn't work ReapZ, you're just going to have to continue researching for a resolution, I'm afraid, as there doesn't appear to be a general fix for this 'issue' : -

Article ID:311504

No Items Appear in the Device Manager List When You Open It

NOTE: Did you read the thread I detailed from Annoyances.org in an earlier post???

Edit > Permissions in Registry Editor, not forgetting to highlight the key 'Enum'. The complete key is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum.

Good luck, YesLink.......

Can you help me?

I have tried doing this but Enum is not under 'currentcontrolset' on my PC and Enum does not have any 'security' under it.

Any ideas?

Same Problem, Different Solution

I had the same problem with nothing in the Device Manager. I also couldn't add any new hardware, or get to My Network Places. I followed the excellent advice with fixing permissions in the registry but still had the same problem. Someone on a differerent forum or post mentioned problems with their services. I looked into that and found when I went to msconfig (Start >Run> msconfig)
under the services tab, just about every service was disabled. I clicked on "Enable All" and rebooted. Then everything worked fine. No idea how it happened, but thanks for the help. Hope this helps a little too.
Peace.
